in the hands of God
went to watch "the day after tomorrow" with jon just now at suntec. the show was quite captivating. when jon suggested that we catch that show, in my mind, i shoved it as one of those "how the world is going to end" type of shows. but i am glad that it was not one of those "blazing meteors trying to burn up the earth" kindda storyline. i seriously dislike that genre of movies, because it just seems so fake. the way they portray meteors raining down on earth is simply uninteresting to me. when the show started, and they started talking about how greenhouse effect, global warming and all these factors would cause polar ice-caps to melt and cause rising of seawater levels, tidal waves, hurricanes and tornados. it does sound a little over-exaggerating but the motive behind the whole story is just to alert people of how burning up the earth's natural resources has its terrible repercussions. as i gobbled up my lunch which was one regular sweetened popcorn (all by myself), i learnt 4 things through the movie...
1. there is no purpose in planning for an unsecured future
when i heard the girl in the show (sam's love interest) said that all the things that she has been fighting for and aiming for all her life was simply for a future that no longer exists, it dawned upon me that this is exactly what a lot of people in this world is doing. they strive to attain good grades in school, get into the best schools, search for the job with the greatest career path, fight for the highest pay, look for a life partner, bring up children, retire in a wonderful place and die in peace. but like the show, who knows what will happen the day after tomorrow? for that matter, who knows what will happen tomorrow? unless you are secured of your future, there is no use planning anything. i am secured of my future. whatever happens tomorrow, i know i will be in Heaven with Jesus Christ. what about you?
2. i know how it might have been during Noah's time
thank God He made the promise to Noah in Genesis 9:11, "I (God) establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth". when i was watching the scene of how the tidal waves rushed into the city of new york and started flooding the place, encapsulating the people and vehicles, and cover the city up to 5 storeys, i can't help but be reminded of how God was so disgusted by the people at that time that He made the decision to wipe out of the world and preserved 8 people's lives. i saw how those people in the show struggled to survive but failed to do so when the water just gushed over them. God created man, and it must have hurt Him a lot to destroy them in such a manner. let us be thankful that God has been merciful to us so far, but let us not forget that God has the power to destroy the world He created too.
3. people always tend to look for God when disaster strikes
through all the movies i have watched so far, i came to the realisation one fact: people always say "God bless you" when something terrible is going to happen. but in their daily lives, they conveniently forget about Him. like there was a part in the show when jack hall was asked what the people can do as they wait for the disaster to strike, he replied "...., and pray". why pray only when they finally realise they are no longer in control? why only turn to God when human intellect has been used and can no longer deduce a solution? why only leave things in the hands of God when our human hands can no longer do anything about the situation? won't it be too late by then?
4. everything is in the hands of God
this conclusion is self-explanatory. somehow, in our minds, we know that there are many things in this world we cannot control nor fully comprehand. but we should be glad that we have a God that is larger than this world we live in, greater than the natural disasters that can strike us and more loving than anyone on this earth. my friends, for those who have not found Jesus Christ, why not leave your lives in the hands of God? as we honour Him, we believe that He would honour us. this doesn't mean that anything bad would not happen to us but we are comforted that our futures are secured in the hands of Christ.
after the movie, because i was getting a heavy head and pre-flu type of achy body, jon suggested that we get some ice cream from the "made in italy" fair just outside carrefour. we went over to the Gelateria Venezia counter and our eyes popped out at the flavours of gelato available. wow! there were "tarufu" (not sure how it is spelt but it is some hazelnut mix that tastes like ferrero rocher), another one that tastes like nutella, mascaporne cheese, rum and raisin, butterscotch, vanilla, cookies and cream, tiramisu (sold out before i got there), lemon sorbet, strawberry sorbet, dark chocolate, among others. so we got butterscotch, cookies and cream and (being a tiramisu and cream cheese lover) mascaporne cheese. it tastes so good! and it isn't expensive. probably half the price of haagen daaz and gelare. it was something like $2.50 for a single flavour and $3.50 for two flavours. this is going to be my new favourite ice cream brand. for those interested, you can get them at the delights corner on the ground floor of carrefour. they have outlets at gutherie avenue and centrepoint as well.
with that satisfying gelato fix, we had the intention to walk to penninsular plaza's bata outlet to find this pair of pink shoes i had my eyes on at the tampines outlet which didn't have my size. but when we walked past vnc at citylink mall, the big red SALE word caught my eye and i had to get my feet in there. so i walked around and saw this gorgeous pair of green pointed shoes. tried on. wasn't sure whether i should get it coz it was just fitting. was so afraid it might get too small. asked the sales lady for half a size bigger and she said they were out of 8.5. but she assured me that the pair would fit me because it would stretch. and she mentioned she got the same pair and was the same size as me. that truly assured me a lot and i got it. that saved us the long walk back to suntec to pick up the car. kept smiling at jon and saying, "i got new shoes............." *grin*
