it isn't all about ME!

as i was watching tv aimlessly, and with my mind half floating to the other end of the universe, this line came to me. IT'S ISN'T ALL ABOUT ME! i was simply thinking about a whole mirage of things when it dawned upon me... men (referring to both men and women) are selfish creatures. as i looked around me, everyone is so concerned with themselves. why do we have the tendency to expect the whole world to revolve around I, ME, MINE and MYSELF?

how do I look? what do I get? why should I do this? why can't I do that? how can I take advantage of others? how can I excel beyond others? why must others be better off than ME? why can't I get what I want? why must I be the one to suffer? why can't I be richer/smarter/more popular/more fortunate/prettier/more handsome/happier?

why are we so self-obsessed? many times, i find myself in this situation as well. not happy with how things are now, i often question why things happen to me. but on hindsight, i find myself so narrow-minded. such behaviour and attitude just makes us more spoilt, ignoring the world around us and ending up fighting for our rights at the expense of others. is this what life is all about? is life all about what i do, what happens to me, how can i benefit from everything and why should i do this? if that's the case, then i think we are all in the wrong place.

God make this world with all the people around us. if He wanted us to focus on ourselves, then wouldn't He have made everyone stay on an island of our own? have we been making wishes and prayers of success for ourselves? that we would be blessed in whatever we are doing? that our life would be made better with the realisation of all our wishes? but does it sound remotely logical if God answers all our prayers according to what we want? then doesn't that make God just a genie in a lamp? that we might just rub the lamp and ask Him out whenever we need His help? and when we are happy with our own lives, we just leave him in the lamp? hey! that doesn't sound very right.. He made this world. He has the power to give (and also to take back). whatever we have, it's not ours. we are just guests in this world He created. whatever we have are just gifts from Him. because the very reason that we are living on this earth is that He gave us life to live and air to breathe. so why are we so concerned about getting the best out of everything for ourselves?

this dawned upon me when i was thinking about prayer requests. when we ask others if there is anything we can pray for them about, or even asking others if there is anything we can help with, it always comes back to themselves. perhaps they have a genuine need which has to be met. but more often than not, we start thinking of ourselves first. in this period of time, i have been receiving messages from people who are request prayers for their exams. i understand that it is an important time in their semester, especially for those who are particularly weak in certain subjects. however, have we stopped to think about others? what about praying for those who are sick around us? and those who are going through suffering, hardships and trials? how about those who are still in darkness and are living aimless lives? could they be more important than what we are going through?

in the life of our Lord Jesus Christ, i learnt a few things. He came to this earth for us. He went through the pain and suffering for us. He died on the cross for us. and even now when He has returned to glory, He is still interceding for us. everything He has done was for us, because He loved us. so why can't we take that example and live as He would? a life to bless others. a life to serve others. a life to give for others. following the greatest commandment, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind", is the next commandment that beseeches us to "Love your neighbour as yourself". (matthew 22:37-38)

although whatever we do hinges on what God has called us to do, let us take on the attitude of a servant. to learn to serve those around us. to help those in trouble. to give to those in need. to bless those who are suffering. to love those who are lost.

and i am leaving everyone with this verse... "Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ." (Galatians 1:10)

sleeping princess...

on sunday evening, i attended my godma's grand-daughter's first month celebration. that makes her my god-niece. and after the umpteenth time of name choosing, they have finally decided to call her... VICTORIA HENG MAN LING! hmm.. nice name... but don't ask me the meaning. i set my eyes on her the first time yesterday... okie, i must admit that she is quite cute. minus the rash marks on her cheeks. think the heat is too much for the little girl to bear.

the celebration was quite an event. you know how normal first month celebrations are like, where guests are invited to the home for a buffet meal. and everyone swooning over the baby? this one was an eye-opener! besides the fact that everyone was looking out for the baby, who was more often than not sheltered by the number of people staring at her, my godfather actually threw an eight-table buffet at the multi-purpose hall next to his block! neighbours were walking past and from their faces, you could tell that they were clueless about what we were celebrating. not a wedding, not a birthday, definitely not a funeral... i bet they had no clue!

but on the whole, it was quite a nice affair. my grandfather was beaming with joy, being upgraded to great-grandfather now. and my godparents were definitely showing their happiness on their faces constantly, besides the fact that my godfather shuns when he sees the camera coming for him (even when i went right to the cooking area where he was cooking!) as for the baby, she is one sleeping princess... she slept when i reached at 5.30pm. she only woke up when they changed her to bring her down to the party. she continued sleeping despite the noises around her. she only occasionally peeped open with one eye to check out what's going on. and that's the start of her cheekiness...

i was there!

on this fateful day, i just decided to pop down to the concourse to buy plastic bags before heading off to church to meet wenhao to paint the banner and prepare the 40 Days of Purpose book packages. so since i have been procrastinating, i was determined that i shall buy the plastic bags today. so off i went and arrived at city hall mrt at around 3.30pm. with my breadtalk cheese bun in my mouth, i was shocked to find out that raffles city was all dark! there was a blackout! at that point, i thought to myself... "OH MAN! should have brought my camera!" never saw a shopping mall so dark before... that explained why everyone seemed to have diverted to citylink mall.

anyway, caught the 3:47pm free shuttle bus to concourse and happily went to buy my stuff. with 10 pounds of plastic bags in hand (they sold them by 5 pounds per packet!) and a bundaberg root beer, i walked towards the small road that led to nicoll highway to catch bus 70. was wondering why there was so many people standing outside concourse along beach road, but not being a typical singaporean, i ignored them. walking along the small road, i found more foreign workers lining the road. all in serious chat. i guessed there was some strike! but in singapore??? nah! ignored again. continued walking... the next sight i saw was astonishing! there were so many people on the overhead bridge along nicoll highway! althought it was such a sight, it still never sparked anything in my mind yet. guess the sun was shining so brightly, it burnt some of my brain cells. check out the picture above. in the middle of the background, you would see the overhead bridge. that's the one!

still walking towards the bus stop, i stopped to wonder, "how come there are no cars on the road today?" hmm.... something was wrong! so i walked to and fro pass the overhead bridge, trying to figure something out. saw two double-decker SBS buses and i thought some bus might have overturned. but both sides of the road closed? cannot be. and they refused to let me walk through the small road back to beach road to catch a bus towards kallang. (thank God they said no. what if that part of the road collapsed too?)

decided to just walk up the overhead bridge. and that was when i discovered the big news! everyone was discussing it. and from afar, we saw a lot of civil defence cars, fire engines, ambulances and police cars. but still no one knew exactly what was going on. just that there was a very serious accident.

anyway, since i was in a hurry, i walked off the overhead bridge and found myself on this small road call republic boulevard. no one probably knows where it is. it's the small road parallel to nicoll highway. and what was i trying to do? catch a CAB! haha... called jon and told him what was going on and where i was stuck at. and he told me to walk towards suntec. but that's like so far away.... arghz! so i walked, and i walked, and i walked... still hanging on to the 10 pounds of plastic bags and my bundaberg root beer! 15 minutes later, i was at the slip road towards the ECP. oh great! trying to catch a cab.... haha! in all my years of cabbing experience, i've never gotten myself in a more impossible-to-catch-a-cab situation! so i talked to jon again.... and decided to drag my way to suntec. and then there was a glimpse of hope! a cabbie changing shift, heading for tampines. i flagged him down and he asked me where i was going. i told him, "upper paya lebar road. but i just need to get out of this place!" and all praises to God, he said, "hop on!"

haha.... and here i am! 3 hours later, reflecting on the day michelle was stranded on the nicoll highway.

gotta pray for all those who are trapped in the collapse... and those who are working there to help them. for the ZGMites out there, roy is there, trying to rescue people. may God's protection be upon him.

in the name of charity...

here's my usual ramblings after a long break. as mentioned in the previous entry, i have been pretty busy with work last week since sharon was out of town (somewhere in the mountains of philippines). next week would be a bit less hectic. a bit more time to cool down (literally, since the weather has been so hot and stuffy!).

as my topic suggests, i am going to give me two-cents (maybe fifty cents, if i write too much) worth of what i think of the NKF charity show that has been on over the last two weekends.

caught it by accident last week at auntie ann's place during family dinner. we were all talking over dessert and i noticed everyone's eyes started looking in the same direction. if my memory serves me well, it was the sharon au's stunt. when she have to climb up a ladder made from unsharpened knives and sit on a throne of knives after that. and just now, i caught a glimpse of zoe tay smashing paper tubes that had a 1 in 3 chance of a knife in it.

my point is why are these celebrities taking the risk of hurting themselves in the name of charity? one of the first few times i came across the word "charity" in the Bible was in 1 Corinthians 13, the famous love chapter. in the king james version, "charity" was used in place of the word "love". so being the non-Bible scholar, i assume the two words to be equal. God did instruct us to first love Him, then the people around us. but i am sure He also meant for us to love ourselves. so if charity is love, then why are people "self-destructing" themselves for charity?

consider this: the local and foreign artistes make a substantial amount of money. the sponsors pour in a substantial amount of money (in terms of discount vouchers, advertisements, etc). mediacorp spent a substantial amount of money in organising this event. if we pool all these funds together, wouldn't we be getting a large amount of money as well? it could well be comparable to the funds they collected through telephone calls. instead of doing all these mindless acts, why don't the sponsors just pledge a certain percentage of sales to charity?

if people have the heart to donate to charity, will it matter if these artistes bang their head against the wall or walk through fire? at the end of the day, what would be the motive behind people making calls to donate money? are they donating to NKF or the artistes? if you could grab a copy of the newspapers (not sure which day) where there were full-page advertisements for this show... my dad pointed to us although it was the "NKF charity show", the only glimpse you get of the NKF logo is this small blob of red at the bottom right hand corner. it was an interesting observation of his and it was that which set me thinking.

after all, if anyone wants to do their part of the poor and sickly kidney patients, a word of motivation and encouragement from the artistes and whoever would be sufficient to convict people to donate. showing snippets into the real lives and daily activities of these patients would be good to show people what they go through and that dialysis is a costly affair. but what message is the media sending out by showing people doing dangerous stunts because they want to "do their part for charity"? if it is that dangerous, then why are they still performing them? according to the millions they received, i'm sure many people were watching the show at home. and in any family, children are a part of this. and being a tv-oriented society (just read in the papers today that many families eat dinners around the tv), there would be children watching the show with all the knives, hammering of stone or something on the chest... not sure what else they had this year. but that matter about children is a whole different story.

so, my stand is that i am totally against self-inflicted pain. regardless whether it is in this instance, suicide, slashing of themselves, over-straining of muscles, over-exerting of their bodies... we were all created so uniquely. God took the effort to craft each and every one of us. why are people still not embracing their opportunity to breathe and live, and choosing to waste their lives in irresponsible ways? yesterday, i heard two different incidents of friends' friends' attempted or considered suicide. and these are young lives. why are people giving up on their lives so easily? just when they go over a hump and lose their balance and fall, they search for the easy way out -- giving up. that is such a selfish act. why don't they think of those people who have no opportunity to fight for their own lives, even if they want to stay on this earth a bit longer? what about those people who contract unknown diseases and die without having the chance to say one last word?

although death is planned by God (when, where and how we die is planned by God), premature ending of life is as good as saying that you are better than God. you can control your own life. but can you really do that? can you control when the rain falls and when the sun shines?

sorry for digressing into this morbid topic. it was a thought that just struck me as i type. back to the topic, what are we doing in the name of charity and love? as Christians, are we abiding by the "love" commandmants? do we love God, our family and friends, our bodies, and "our neighbours as ourselves"? as people in general, do we have the spirit of love as we communicate and relate with each other?

as the verse in 1 Corinthians 13:13 says...
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

love emcompasses everything. if we have love in everything we do, all things will fall in place. so let me encourage each of us, to take some time and ponder on the people we love. have we recently expresses our love for those people? have we said a prayer of gratitude to God who have loved us so much? why not give a squeeze to those whom we love? what about a little note to say how much you appreciate someone who has been kind to you? these are all gestures of love.

and the S$189 million reserve is another issue..... left for another day...

hands

haven't had time to blog lately. been so busy, and by the time i'm home and done with what i have to do, i'm deadbeat. will find time over the weekend to scribble some thoughts. have been doing a lot of thinking... but hands are procrastinating from typing....

talking about hands, picked this off derek's blog. thought it was really meaningful.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hands
Hands, God gave us hands
Hands to create
Hands to give
Hands to love
Hands to protect
But we have misused our hands
Hands made to create, now destroy
Hands made to give, now take away
Hands made to love, now hate
Hands made to protect, now let down
Jesus stretched out His hands to a dying world
But we took them and nailed them to a cross!
And on the third day He rose again
And now He stands before with His hands open
Would you reject Him? Or would you accept Him?
What would you do with the hands of Jesus?
people need the Lord
on this Good Friday, i think it's so appropriate as we hear this song. a msg from a friend last night reminded me that there are so many aimless people in this world. as we look at their faces, what do we see? behind those smiling faces, what is going on in their hearts? what is going on in OUR hearts?
on this day, almost 2000 years ago, a man who was blameless and sinless, bore the torture of capital punishment. 39 whips He suffered. the scorning, spitting and insults of His own people He endured. a cross larger than Himself, made of wood from a single tree, He carried. the ultimate pain in His heart He felt. why did He do all this? He did not deserve such a cruel ending to His 33 years on this earth. people found no wrong in Him, yet His actions which was to direct people to the Truth offended some people. and because of this, they nailed Him to the cross. they drove a large metal nail through each of His wrists. they pushed a crown of thorns onto His head. they pierced His feet together with a single nail. and they left Him hanging on the cross.
yet as He was suffering, with His lungs gasping for air which He hardly took in, He prayed on behalf of the people who crucified Him, saying, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." (Luke 23:34) what great love this is!
which one of us, in times of suffering and pain, can refrain from blaming the ones who caused us hurt? even when we are in position to administer revenge, we can hold back our bitterness and anguish, and forgive those who torment us?
Jesus did that. so that we can have hope today. why is this day so different? because today we are no longer slaves to sin, and we can have freedom from bondage. for those of you who are still doubtful of what i am saying, what do you think you are in this world for? just to wander aimlessly, suffering hurts from the people we love and trust, enduring pain from our limitless wants and needs? i'm sure we are here for a purpose. if not, then i'd rather not come to this earth at all.
i will be glad if anyone who wants to know more about my faith just ring me up and pop the question.
here's the song playing in my private lounge...
People need the Lord
Everyday they pass me by,
I can see it in their eye.
Empty people filled with care,
Headed who knows where?
On they go through private pain,
Living fear to fear.
Laughter hides their silent cries,
Only Jesus hears.
People need the Lord, people need the Lord.
At the end of broken dreams, He's the open door.
People need the Lord, people need the Lord.
When will we realize -- people need the Lord?
We are called to take His light
To a world where wrong seems right.
What would be too great a cost
For sharing life with one who's lost?
Through His love our hearts can feel
All the grief they bear.
They must hear the words of life
Only we can share.
People need the Lord, people need the Lord
At the end of broken dreams, He's the open door.
People need the Lord, people need the Lord.
When will we realize that we must give our lives,
For people need the Lord.
People need the Lord.
water-walkers!
*yawnz* today was such a long day... even after a nap in the evening, i'm still tired. but i can deem today as a fruitful day. sunday school was great! uncle roy taught on the doctrine of the Holy Spirit and what its purpose is. after that, pastor irene spoke from matthew 13:25-33. the ever-familiar story of Jesus and the disciples in the boat during a storm and Jesus beckoning Peter to walk on water.
it was faith that stirred Peter to believe and take the first step on the water. despite the storm that was looming, he still could do just that. as the sunday school song goes... "with Christ in the vessel, we can smile at the storm." Peter was coming face to face with a storm and he was doing something thought to be impossible to anybody.
but as pas irene said, in everything we do, it involves a risk. quoting from eileen guber (1987) which pas irene shared...
"You can live on bland food so as to avoid an ulcer;
drink no tea or coffee or other stimulants in the name of health;
go to bed early and stay away from night life;
avoid all controversial subjects so as never to give offense;
mind your own business and avoid involvement in other people's problems;
spend money only on necessities and save all you can.
But you can still break your neck in the bathtub!"
everything involves a risk, but do we have faith in God? Peter had his faith in Jesus and did the impossible. although he came face to face with the storm and reality started to set in, and eventually he fell into the water. i agree with pastor that at the end of the story, he was the one who was blessed out of this situation. he was going to return home a changed man because of what happened to him. no man in history had managed to walk on water and he did! something that seemed impossible, yet he was able to do it. as for the other 11 disciples who just stayed in the boat and watched the whole incident... my conclusion is that they were "boat potatoes" who would die of boredom and stagnation (because they were unwilling to change their current position) and perhaps starvation (because there wouldn't be enough food in the boat for them forever!).
likewise, as Christians, are we willing to take the step of faith in obedience to God? when we obey and do what God has commanded us to do, although sometimes the task ahead seems daunting and impossible, that is when God can work a miracle in our lives. when we experience it, i'm sure we will never forgot it for the rest of our lives... it becomes our life-changing story and that's when our faith will grow and we can do greater work!
as for non-Christians, if you have gotten this far in my blog entry, thank you for being so patient with my thoughts on something you might not understand. however, as you read what i have wrote, please consider this: are you a "boat potato"? this term is derived from the term "couch potatoes". "boat potatoes" are people who stayed in the boat and refused to take the risk to listen to God. they avoided believing in the spiritual realm and are doubtful of what will actually happen to them. in plain terms, they were afraid of the unknown.
are you a "boat potato" or a water-walker?
what drives your life?
did this advertisement this morning for church... one sunday during service, this idea came to mind and i quickly scribbled in into my diary. the tagline was "what drives you to church?" then. i was contemplating on what makes people come to church. what is the motivating factor? just checked and it was 22 feb. then sometime last month when i was reading the book "the purpose driven life", i popped into this chapter titled "what drives your life?". how apt!
so i proposed this to jo and she agreed with the idea. so i went ahead with planning to do this ad... however, procrastination crept into my mind and i never got to doing it till now.
what actually drives your life? what is your motivating factor in life? what keeps you going and not giving up? what are we looking forward as the day past us by? everyday, we walk through this life, one day closer to the day we leave this earth. without the right purpose in life, we are just going to let time slip past us so easily... just like sand through the hourglass.
give it some thought and let me know what you arrive at.
welcome to the family!
yesterday, our family saw a new addition... my god-brother (who is also my cousin) became a father of a baby girl at 2pm in the afternoon! so by name, i'm a god-aunt! haha... she's the first of the next generation in our family... i'm sure my godma is pleasantly elated! heard from my mum that she wasn't very excited before the birth of her grand-daughter and wasn't going around fussing over what to buy, but now... it seems like she bought so much stuff for the little baby in her home.
mummy and daddy went over to see the baby this evening. she is only one day old and the hospital discharged her already. apparently, it seems like KK was overfilled.. tsk! but according to them, the baby looks healthy and is drinking milk well and good.. so that goes to show that she must be pretty healthy. and mummy said she is quite pretty.. thinking to myself, i thought babies don't look very cute when they are born. coz their features are not very well-developed yet. but since mummy says she looks pretty, i'll just believe her now till i set my eyes on her.
god-brother decided to call her "wei(3) wen(2)"... heng wei wen! but he forgot to think of an english name for her until mummy reminded him just now. so i guess he'll be cracking his head of an english name now. i can imagine how mind-boggling it is to choose a name out of a whole list... mummy was brainstorming with me just now... veronica... rebecca... elizabeth... catherine... jasmine... louisa...
when i think of the baby, i immediately thought of my ah kong. he's now been promoted to "kong(2) tou(4)"... that is great-grandfather in hainanese. i'm sure he must be really happy to know that the baby has arrived! it's his first great-grandchild and i'm quite certain that he is looking forward to seeing her soon...
tears start to well up in my eyes as i bring back memories of my ah po. she would have loved to see this baby... she has always been looking forward to being an "ah tou"... she would have been so excited that i bet she would be going high and low to prepare everything needed for the baby. she would have even offered to help take care of the baby. and i'm sure she would have done a great job (judging from the way all 9 of us grew up to be...). she was always pestering my god-brother when he was going to decide to have a baby. but now, she has left without having a glance at her great-grand-daughter. and she promised to see my children... she told me she would teach me how to take care of my baby... she said she would see me get married! i miss her so much.......................... i know i shouldn't be grieving, and i am not! i just miss her so much... but i know she's in a better place. she has gone to be with our Lord Jesus... and she's in a place without suffering... without pain... with love... and with joy!
i hold firm to the promise God gave me the hour after ah po left...
"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)
for those who didn't quite understand that verse in its cheem english...
"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." Hebrews 11:1 (NIV)
some of you reading my blog may be wondering what i meant in my previous lines... just after ah po passed away, i was sitting outside the icu ward, on the sofa, crying badly. and i kept doing nothing but praying. i didn't know what to think and couldn't bring myself to do anything. so all i could do was pray. and i kept asking God, "is ah po going to heaven to be with you?". "were You the one who took ah po away from all her pain and suffering?".
and i wanted to msg some people about my grandma... so i took out my palm. and when i opened it, it was at Ephesians 6:16. the sunday before, jon had borrowed my palm and read this verse. and it stopped there. it said, "In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one." and the word FAITH jumped out at me! bringing me back to the verse i heard bro andy shared in sunday school one day... Hebrews 11:1.
that verse brought peace to me immediately. it simply meant that when i placed my faith in Christ, i can be sure of things i hoped for and things i cannot see. it suddenly became so clear to me. my grandma is definitely in heaven with Jesus! although she had never openly expressed that she believed in Jesus, that new year's party at sis esther's place, when she raised her hand to indicate her decision to be a Christian, God had honoured that desire of hers and she was then taken into God's family.
this might sound really unrealistic to a lot of people... but i truly believed that everything happens for a purpose. i am confident that it was God who led me to discover His Word and gave me comfort when i needed it. we cannot depend on ourselves for there is someone much higher in thoughts and ways than us. our lives reflect God's blessings to us... think about this. in your life, i'm sure there were many things that you can be grateful for. who do you think gave you all those good things? who gave you life to enjoy all these good things? who gave you parents life to bring you to this earth? it all stems from the same source... the Almighty God.
and thinking on God's promises, He has wiped away my tears and gave me the hope to see ah po in heaven again! i have felt God's peace and His presence surrounding me in my time of need... have you?
if you know me as "senior", you are probably the little michelle from pl netball.
if you know me as someone with a lot of contacts, you are probably someone who always emails me for contacts.
if you know me as unpolished-gem, you proabably don't know me in person.
