Q & A on diets/exercise

this is so funny.... got it from superen. for those exercise-deficits (i think i fall in this category) out there, please consoled.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it...don't waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body, and you have body fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain... Good.

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: You're not listening. Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy? HELLO ...... Cocoa beans ... another vegetable!!! It's the best feel good food around.

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?
A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.

more suede?

just when i thought that i should stop staring at the mango bags on my blog and go off to read my female mag, i had to stop at this page dedicated to suede. thankfully the only thing i could afford in that page was a suede belt from topshop at $33. and that is something i wouldn't want. *phew*

anyway, the weekend that past was fabulous. except i ended it dumped on the bed. i literally dumped myself on the bed out of fatigue. always thought the weekend is meant for doing things i liked, at a comfortable pace. but i'm not complaining. every day is filled with new discoveries.

sunday was definitely of new things. i visited The Coffee Connoiseur outlet at beach road. with nice cushy white leather sofa. first time there. this outlet was almost empty (save a group of middle-aged people sipping tea and a couple staring at each other). but it was a really cosy affair. had a nice time with jon, jerry, miri, hao, boy, theo and new friend gavin (miri & jerry's friend). whiled the afternoon away over a glass of iced raspberry tea and a slice of ole ole oh. yummy-licious!

after which, jerry, miri and gavin left. the rest of us headed for swee lee at bras basah, then to raffles city coz i had to attend the singapore fashion designers contest. my first fashion show. thought some of the contestants really had potential. spotted a few pieces which i would love to own, but....... *sigh* anyway, video presentation went smooth. current client went around boasting he was one of the first to get the software. some others expressed interest. it was truly a gift from God that all these happened. when we least expect it, He's there.

hot and sunny afternoon today. felt so lazy and tired. body was aching from the pills i took last night. but i suddenly remembered what my mummy bought... sweetened condensed milk! coupled with toast..... it's mind blowing! i couldn't stop eating it.... had 4 at a go! i'm growing fat.................

bag addict

i have this huge problem about bags. i can't seem to restrain myself from buying more. although there are some that are sitting in my huge laundry basket (which i used to house them) that i have not used in 2 years.

i must confess... the more i visit my own blog, the more tempted i am to get the mango one.

bad temptation. bad, bad temptation. i shall flee from temptation. i shall resolve to visit my blog less often in a day.

here i go! off to read the free Female mag i received in the singapore fashion week goodie bag this evening. *poof*

but hey... i hope there are no mouth-watering bags in there too. *sigh*.

from gloomy to chirpy

slept late last night. couldn't drag myself out of bed till 9.45am when an event organizer called. i remotely forgot that it was a work day and people start work at 9am. this is what happens when you work from home and flexible hours.

gloomy morning. it was an overcast friday. multi-tasked the whole afternoon. at any given time, i hate at least 3 msn windows open (and at least 2 were related to some form of work). i was thankful for the cooling breeze but the gloom got to me.

went out with jon in the late afternoon and decided to get some comfort food to pull myself out of the trough. headed for town. paid a visit to tangs, then to mango (where i saw this suede bag i adored but at $69, blah!) and finally pacific plaza. dinner time. decided to pamper ourselves with sushi. walked to genki at forum and the queue diverted us out of the place. walked aimlessly and settled on splurging at nydc. crowded and noisy, but we had a good time talking about work (now and future). i was so full yet we thought of taking a short walk before heading for coffee club for their choc fondue. as we walked, the tummy got heavier and decided the fondue can wait.

slowly walked and admired the n.day booths outside ngee ann city. unknowingly headed for cineleisure. headed for the coffee connoisseur to wait for zihui and jac. concluded that it was a day of pampering ourselves. we were completely splurging on ourselves. to think jon almost order some $12 french coffee. had cakes and coffee (for jon) and tea (for me). sat around, read the edge and act classy. haha. inside joke.

the girls strolled in after a night of shopping. chatted. laughed. chatted some more. snapshot with garfield poster. (jac, i want the photo!) went our separate ways. meeting on tuesday to collect our grad gowns and they are accompanying me to the singapore fashion week show at raffles city.

i just needed time out. i got it. and i feel better. thanks hun! (and the "angels" too...)

was surfing at the mango e-store for the bag i mentioned when i saw a few that caught my eye. for all your sharp-eyed pals out there, please alert me when you see similar designs at affordable prices.

i have a soft spot for suede!

this is just so sweet... and unique.

are you original?

we always strive to be different. to be special. to be original.

currently reading:

but when as i was reading "cutting edge advertising", although this phrase was directed at advertisement styles, i felt that it speaks volumes. paraphrased myself to drive my point, "nothing else in this world is original. God was the last to be original. everyone else are simply copycats."

so we think we can shine in the crowd? only because God made us one of a kind. we are nothing if wasn't for Him. recalling what i heard at joe aaron's "mini concert" the other day, if we just pince our noses and lose the breath of life, we are reduced to nothing. so let's not take ourselves so seriously. let us shift our focus to the One who made us possible.

awakened!

suddenly, the rained poured. and i lost my inspiration and mood to work. came back to work on a script for a video presentation this sunday during the singapore fashion week - singapore fashion designers contest at raffles city. but looking at the huge raindrops falling on the tree outside my window, i feel so lazy. decided to take a break and check out my friends' blogs. i reckon everyone has been busy lately. not much updates posted in the past day. must be the WORK monster consuming everyone. guess i'll just blog since i have not done so in a while. let me shed some light on my previous entry.

i watched "the notebook" with jon at plaza sing on monday. nicholas sparks is truly a brilliant writer. although the relationship between the old man and the old lady suffering from dementia was expected, the storyline was still intriguing and kept me pinning to know the ending. towards the end, when the old lady finally remembered her husband, who patiently reads to her every day from the notebook that tells their love story, it was so painful to hear that every time she gathers her past memories, they don't last for more than 5 minutes. expectedly, she loses her memory again after a couple of minutes and throws herself into a fit. as her husband watched the nurses restrain her, tears filled his eyes and mine as well. such is the love he had for her. being there for her without knowing if she will ever remember him. and such was the love that took them away together.

what would become of me when i grow old? i pray that i will age gracefully. being able to control my mind and continue to do the work of God. the last thing i want is to be a burden to the people around me. i pray that God will perserve my memory and my life for His glory.

after the show, jon and i decided to grab a quick bite from the foodcourt. that was when we spotted randall tan and rachel lee (with two other artistes/DJs). quickly messaged vic, since she likes randall. wanted to take a shot of him for her, but i was a tad too far. (refer to snapshot below.) after two messages to vic, that was when i realised i lost something! i shall not elaborate any further here on what it is. only a selected few knows. i quickly searched my bag, my notebook bag, my pockets.. nothing! ran back to the toilet, where i was before the foodcourt.. nothing! i was devastated! cried! couldn't finish my dinner. cried somemore. thankfully, jon was so understanding. he kept comforting me constantly. giving my hugs to calm me down, and his shoulder for me to wet. his shoulder has this special effect, which makes me sob my heart out and then calm down just as quickly.

with a heavy heart, we went home. i felt so down the entire night. but at the same time, i feel bad if i embarrassed jon by crying in the foodcourt. some people were looking at us like something was really wrong with us. anyway, i have gotten over the matter a little more. learning to take things easy now. as jon said, "things are material. they will never last. it is the people around us who are more important. it is about how we treasure them."

to all those who have shown me concern in the past two days either by leaving me an encouragement note in my comments box, or dropping me a "be happy" message on msn, thanks for all your love! it is definitely heartwarming to know that there are people out there who care about the little things that happen to me. even though you have no idea what is going on.

just a side note, i am currently watching the olympic's men's backstroke race on tv.. and i start to wonder why some of those men don't have armpit hair. especially the race winner, this american who proudly punched his fist in the air many times upon learning that he won the race and beat the olympic record. *ponders* heck!

snapshots taken over the past few days. enjoy. back to work.

dian xin, dian xin

national day weekend was a blast! saturday was study group, youth service, teochew porridge @ kovan and chng's residence for the evening. sunday was insightful sunday school, encouraging sermon (refer to previous entry), youth carnival @ east coast park, pizza dinner @ jon's with shan. monday was recording @ church in the morning, snooped off to han's @ hougang mall for lunch and riddles, vic's place for an afternoon of tuition, n.day parade and singapore idol, then slumber party till 2am before we bonked off to bed. woke up today a little dazed from the lack of sleep and left with jon after a brekkie of french toast and tea (courtesy of "iron chef" vic and her assistant, cy.)

taken @ east coast park on 8 august

taken @ vic's place on 9-10 august

we had a spur-of-the-moment situation today. wanted to hop off in the evening for dinner and a movie (and not forgetting, it's gelare tuesday!). scoured the papers and realised that there was nothing nice at the cinema. glanced over to the "what's happening" on the Life! paper and saw that dim sum dollies were still showing! i had thought of watching it, but shan told me yesterday that miri and joy were watching it yesterday. (and somehow she mentioned that yesterday was the last day. i was bummed out!)

when i saw it today, i had the strong urge to watch it. and since there weren't anything nice at the movies, jon suggested we catch this evening's show. went to the sistic website and saw that it was almost sold out! couldn't make a booking online because it was already 5.30pm (booking had to be before 2pm on the day of the show), i called them up to check. apparently, only the $40 tickets had twin seats left (the rest were all single seats). so we quickly grabbed the tickets and headed for the esplanade for the 8pm show. (talk about spur of the moment!)

the show was hilarious! tan kheng hwa described it best in her producer's message, "...an all original show put up by singaporeans, for singaporeans, about singaporeans." glen goei said in his director's message, "...an originally written musical cabaret show, is the ideal platform to celebrate all things singapore. appearing in bite-size pieces, strung together with great humour, catchy song and dance... the dim sum dollies poke fun, inject laughter, bring tears, and most important of all, remind us of the things we take for granted, and the real reason why we are indeed, uniquely singaporean."

every scene was a snip-off our daily lives and experiences from being singaporean. my personal favourites were "nip tuck sucks" (*sings* nip, tuck, stitch, slice, cut and lift!), tai tais on parade (them wanting to become the Opposition Tai Tais to take over the government), parking pontianak (this scene was powerful! how they poked fun at parking attendants with the malay accents) and singapore girl (i thought the song was really nice).

was really tempted to buy the soundtrack because selena tan, pam oei and emma yong sound so good together. even jon was captured by their harmony. and the songs (despite some with not-so-right morals) were quite interesting and well-composed and written. should i, or shouldn't i? and their talents were literally oozing out of them. they can sing, they can dance, they can act, they can write lyrics (that's selena), and they have great stage presence! wow! i'm completely impressed and bought over! singapore really has great drama talent... just that it's limited so it's always the same talented people who are in the best local plays. let's not forget about beefcakes, their 8-men accompanying dancers who can also sing...

by the way, for the $80 we paid, apart from the programme, we got to bring home 2 singapore flags. perhaps they thought that after all the jabbing they did, it was time to redeem themselves by singing n.day songs (complete with singapore flag and all)...

for those who enjoy satirical plays, especially within the singaporean context, and can spare some extra cash and time, go catch it at the esplanade by this saturday! worth every cent!

people, people everywhere

watching one of my favourite japanese drama serials now. so glad that mediacorp brought the series back. apparently, this is the final series. sigh. it definitely adds some entertainment to my sunday nights. before this, i could not bring myself to switch on tv becauses there was nothing else to watch. and there was that not-very-interesting zhang fei show (no offence, josh!).

cont'd after the show @ 0023hrs

anyway, topic at church service this morning: problems. the 4 facts of problems, the 3 purposes of problems and the 3 ways to react to problems.

what i learnt today:
- problems are inevitable, unpredictable, of many kinds and purposeful.
- 3Rs to handle problems (Rejoice, Request = pray, Relax and let God work)

the most significant thing which struck me was something i shared with the group yesterday. if we treated God like a genie in a bottle... oops! i meant lamp!, and got whatever we wanted the way we want it, then that wouldn't make Him God. He would just be a genie. and we would learn nothing. we will all simply become spoilt brats which would result in a disaster. people will be fighting over the same thing, then it would become a challenge of "who's the first to rub the lamp".

such a timely message. we go through problems everyday. wherever we are, whatever we do, whoever we meet with, somehow, somewhere, problems are bound to arise.

have you ever thought to yourself what the worst problems to handle are? to me, it is the problems involving people. God gave us minds to think and personalities so distinctly unique that no two persons are exactly the same. that is also exactly the same reason why conflicts arise, hence problems are created (once again.. and again). life would be a breeze if there weren't so many people around to come in conflict with us. but then again, someone else would probably be saying the same things about us. so it's not about "everyone else". it's the "me" we have to focus on. (the only time i encourage the "me" thinking.)

the way to deal with problems is definitely not to dwell in them. focusing our entire energy on the problem will not solve it. (reminds me on yesterday's dinner when we were talking about staring at the porridge till it becomes rice. same logic.) we just have to look inside ourselves and see what exactly is going on. be honest with ourselves and evaluate the situation. look at what we have said and what we have done.

attributing blame on others is always naturally the first instinct. we ought to steer away from that thought and figure out what we can do to help the situation instead. as uncle roy said today, "we cannot control the situations or problems that come our way, but what we can control is our response towards them. that deals with our ATTITUDE."

it is going to be a struggle to solve the people-problems we face. and i am still digging my way towards that direction... let's do it together and it will definitely make the digging easier for everyone.

shots of the week

too tired to blog. didn't do much today. met cherie and jac for a shopping experience at unknown city plaza. realised that these so-called wholesale shops are not cheap at all.

feast your eyes on the shots of the week!

taken @ mike's place on 1 august 2004

took these shots of jon when we were walking from funan to suntec. couldn't help but take a shot of the blue blue skyline towering over our business district. before that, we saw a huge group of people gathering on the padang. with policemen as well. guess what they were doing? the supreme court was having a fire drill!! haha!

update your address book

hi everyone,

i have decided to start a new email account, given the amount of time i spend on my notebook. going to leave the singnet account to my parents.

some of you might have known that my old PC is sitting unattached from the monitor under my table. i have no intention to assemble it to export my address book so it would be wonderful if you could send me an email to my new email address unpolished_gem@yahoo.com.sg so that i can add you to my new address book. =)

alternatively, those lazy ones out there can just drop me a comment with your email address.

birds chirping

i woke up early today to the rays of the warm morning sun, the breezy wind from my fan (decided not to sleep in aircon too often, due to dry skin) and the chirping of birds outside my window. actually it wasn't chirping. more like screeching. i was still half-awake... tossing and turning in bed, when i heard the scariest thing! i heard a bird under my table! i could literally hear it flapping its wings! arghz! i jumped out of bed... knocked against the table top (was too afraid to look) and the bird flew out of my room! i immediately closed the windows and went out of my room.

now that explains why i'm feeling lethargic and aching... i hate being woken up before i am ready to be.

the proximity of blogging

i'm just taking a little time off my busy morning for a breather. realised that i have not been blogging often. i am trying to figure out why. last week was a hectic week for me and this week, i have been home pretty late and tired.

but what makes this fever of blogging rise so high? i am wondering, does blogging bring people closer or pull people apart? on one hand, we can read about each others' thoughts, what they've been up to, and how they are feeling. we learn more about each other in a shorter time, because it requires more time to meet up friends and catch up, either individually or in small groups. but on the other hand, because we can find out all about our friends (and their friends) online, this diminishes the need for personal contact. i find myself in situations where i am reading about my friends' friends' lives, yet i would not recognise them even if they walked right past me on the streets.

is this the world we want to create? a world where we selectively release information to those whom we know (and sometimes to those we don't) and eventually, we don't see the need for the personal touch anymore. let us stop and think. we were made for fellowship and community living. fellowship. what is it all about? it is the comradeship and companionship of people. how can we truly share our hearts and minds with each other, if we don't even come fact-to-face (and in some instances, we don't even know the person's face)?

even as i don't oppose to the idea of blogging, let us not forsake the importance of meeting up and sharing our lives in a more personal note. after all, although a picture speaks a thousand words, a picture can't share the exact feelings and memories you have of that occasion, event or place.

the BULL

melvin is so gonna kill me for this... but this is how he looked as a bull! i still don't understand why SGX couldn't afford to pay some extra to wear the bull costume, instead of having their entire PR department take turns to don the ugly suit!

updated @ 2323hours. melv just confirmed that it was him in this photo.
